Jonathan Orders Keshi’s Return For AFCON?

Reports circulating in the media allege that former Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi was asked to resume his duties for the AFCON qualifiers.
Eagles’ ex Big Boss, whose contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expired in summer, after the team’s quit from the World Cup tournament, then managed the team for 4 qualifying matches of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on the interim basis.

However a day after the the Super Eagles defeated Sudan 3-1 in a must-win match for Nigeria, Keshi was relieved from his job by the NFF led by its new president Amaju Pinnick. The football body appointed former coach Shaibu Amodu in an interim capacity.

Today morning strong indications appeared that Keshi might return for at least 2 November games.

Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye took to his Twitter account Thursday morning to deliver short breaking news:

Goal.com confirms with reference to its sources that Keshi was asked to return under the order of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Supersport.com provided the same information adding that Jonathan held an emergency meeting with Pinnick last night strongly recommending him to reinstate Keshi as Super Eagles head coach.

The media’s source said:

“I can confirm to you that Stephen Keshi will return as the head coach of the Super Eagles because of the presidential intervention. The president (Jonathan) met with all football stakeholders last night and he told them that Keshi must return as the Super Eagles coach with immediate effect.”

Regarding Amodu who was meant to substitute Keshi, the source said he would “step down”.

The NFF is yet to make an official statement on the matter.
The Super Eagles must win both November encounters, with Congo and South Africa to have a chance of qualifying for the tournament.

Fayose said this today in Abuja while explaining to newsmen the concept of the ‘stomach infrastructure’ he initiated in his state, saying it doesn’t only mean sharing of food and money to the people..

“I go to beer parlour on Friday to stay with the common men there. Governance is not church; it is about diverse characters and you must relate with them as such. Christmas is coming. Why do people go out of their ways to be shopping or doing other things if it is not just to make people merry? So, I’m grooming chicken, buying rice, yams, plantain, and the rest of them. I am sure if I give it to families during the festive period, they will be happy. So, stomach infrastructure is a way of life.” he said

Explosion In Edo State

According to reports from NAN about the explosion that occurred in Benin, Edo state on Saturday, this is what happened
An explosion rocked a residential estate in Benin, the Edo State capital Saturday, the state police command said Sunday.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Ejiroro Ahwara, confirmed the attack on Denis Osadebey Avenue, in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin on Sunday.

He said the “Command received information that at about 10: 30 p.m. on Saturday that there was an explosion at Dennis Osadebey Avenue, Benin City.’’
Mr. Ahwara said that men of the Special Anti-Bomb Squad and patrol vehicles were immediately drafted to the scene of incident.

He explained that preliminary investigation revealed that items suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device, IED, made up of two tiger batteries of 15 volt each connected to long wire, was thrown into the mini-estate from outside.

Mr. Ahwara said the explosion affected the ceiling boards at the security post in the estate as well as a part of the main gate.
He explained that the impact dug a small hole at the entrance gate, but stated that “luckily, no life was lost”.

“The IED used in the attack has been recovered by the Bomb Disposal Unit for analysis, while some suspects have been arrested”, he further stated.

Boko Haram Splits Into Two Groups Following Peace Talks With Government

It was gathered on Sunday that the Federal Government might have entered into the ceasefire with the faction interested in the cessation of hostilities in the North-East.

A reliable source in government told The PUNCH in Abuja that the leaders of the pro-peace faction of the sect , were the ones who took part in the negotiations with representatives of the Chadian, Cameroonian and Federal Government in Ndjamena, Chad last week.

Federal Government and Boko Haram representatives are expected to fine tune the details of the ceasefire at another meeting in Ndjamena on Tuesday.

Our source said he believed that the attacks on Shafa in Borno State and Sina, Adamawa State on Friday, could have been carried out by the faction not be interested in ending the violence.

He said “The Boko Haram faction that carried out the attack is the one that wants the insurgency to continue. It is made up of hardcore elements who believe their goal of imposing Sharia on the whole country has not been achieved and for them, the violence must continue until they win the war or perish in their quest.”

There had been reports of disagreements among the top members of the sect following the clamour by some of its commanders for an end to the insurgency.

A yet to be verified report had said that unknown sect members died a few weeks ago in a shoot-out between the pro-peace and the pro-Jihad factions.

The military is however keeping its side of the peace deal by suspending all hostilities against the insurgents, The PUNCH learnt.

This, according to a top military source, was a direct outcome of a directive issued by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.

Badeh had on Friday ordered the suspension of all on-going aerial and ground offensives against the sect.

Our source, who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said the military did not consider the latest attacks as a violation of the ceasefire.

He explained that it was very likely that the operatives of the terrorist cells who carried out the attacks were not aware of the peace deal.

The source said, “One cannot say the peace deal has been violated; it is the nature of most terrorist organisations to act that way, and it should be expected because they have several layers of operation.

“They have such a long chain that it takes time for them to communicate with the top unlike the military where you are very quick communication channels.

“Another thing is that each of the cells operates independent of the other. So those who carried out the attacks in the villages in might not even be aware of the deal.”

He however explained that security forces would not allow the other faction to exploit the peace deal to violate the security and safety of the people.

It was learnt that while the security forces would not be on the offensive, sustained efforts would be made to prevent crimes from being committed against the people.

The PUNCH gathered from another source that the military had ensured the suspension of aerial and land offensive in compliance with the CDS’ directive to give peace a chance.

He said, “We will not be watching any violation of the security and safety of our people, we will not be on the offensive but we won’t allow crimes to be committed.

“The air operation is suspended for the duration of the ceasefire; we will not be on the offensive; we really need to comply with the peace agreement at least to give peace a chance.”

Investigations confirmed that soldiers have remained in their areas of deployment in the North-East.

Another security source warned that soldiers would be left with no option than to act if attacked.

He said while the troops fighting the terrorists learnt of the ceasefire from the media, they were awaiting briefing from their commanders.

He said, “This is ceasefire does not say pull back soldiers; so soldiers have not been pulled back. It is logical, if soldiers are attacked, they would fight back; they won’t sit and watch but soldiers have not gone for any operation since the ceasefire.”

Efforts to speak with the Director Defence Information, Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade,on the latest developments did not succeed as calls to his mobile telephone line did not connect.

But other sources in government said that the government was still expressing cautious optimism in its dealings with the sect.

This, it was learnt, was the reason behind its decision to refrain from making a categorical statement on the ceasefire since the news broke on Friday.

A top official, who pleaded anonymity, said the government has so far decided to keep a dignified silence to “see how the matter plays out during the week.

This, according to him, was the reason why the government was not surprised about the attacks after the ceasefire agreement became a public knowledge.

He said, “The government does not want to jump into the fray. It is true that discussions are ongoing but the government is watching the situation critically.

“The thinking is that once the process scales through, the government will make a public pronouncement.

“Hopefully, once the Tuesday meeting is successful, the government will talk. For now, we are watching events.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, did not yield result of the time of filing this report.

Sect captures another Borno town, beheads six

On Sunday, members of the sect captured another Borno community, Abadam, after laying siege to it.

They also beheaded six people along the Biu – Garkida Road in the state.

It was gathered from security sources that the insurgents, numbering 100, invaded Abadam on Friday night and took it over on Sunday morning.

They said the heavily armed terrorists arrived in the town in a convoy of about 50 Toyota Hilux vehicles and motorcycles.

They however did not give a casualty figure but a resident told journalists in Maiduguri on the telephone that he saw six corpses, including that of his friend, while fleeing the town.

He said, “Boko Haram gunmen entered Abadam on Friday night and shot at any resident in sight for almost two days until the early hours of Sunday when many of us started to flee to our farmlands, bushes and border areas of Bosso in Niger Republic.

“I escaped by crossing River Kumadugu to Diffa and from there, I boarded a bus to Damasak before arriving in Maiduguri today (Sunday).

“Among the people killed was my friend. My parents and other relations I believe are still in the bush and I do not know their state as I speak to you .”

The resident added that there was no security presence in the town throughout the period of the attack.

Another resident also told journalists that the sect members, as in other places they had captured, hoisted their black and white flag in three strategic locations in the community.

He lamented the possibility of the town, being declared an Islamic Caliphate.

Some communities in the state under the control of the sect are Dikwa, Gwoza, Marte, Damboa, Banki, Bama, Wulgo, Kirenowa.

Our correspondent in Borno State also gathered that the insurgents beheaded six people on the same road where the Emir of Gwoza, Idrissa Timta, was killed a few months ago.

The Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mr. Mark Lipdo, said on Sunday that the terrorists left the bodies of the slaughtered victims lying on the road for a long time.

He said the son to one of the victims was injured by the insurgents when he attempted to remove his father’s body from the scene.

Bishop Oyedepo Allegedly Barred From Entering Britain

Multi-millionaire Nigerian pastor, Bishop David Oyedepo, the general supervisor of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, better known as Winners Chapel, was banned from entering Britain by the UK Home Office, according to sources.

Britain’s Charity Commission after initial investigations resolved that money given to Bishop Oyedepo’s church for charitable purposes were filtered to Nigeria to account the pastor’s colorful lifestyle.

According to SaharaReporters pastor David Oyedepo and one of his sons had been aware of the inquiry of church finances for at least three years now.

The source added that the probe was generated after the British Charity Commission found out that the wealthy pastor had taken out more than £16 million from the UK since 2009.

The commission carefully screens any repatriation of church incomes, revealing that any repatriation of funds of that size was most likely illegal.

But Bishop Oyedepo demanded that he was leading a not-for-profit religious organization, “but the commission determined that he was diverting funds to engage in a series of profitable ventures.”

David Oyedepo, who is considered to be Nigeria’s richest pastor and listed as the richest televangelists in the world, keeps a luxurious private jet and has several expensive cars, among many other amazing personal possessions.

Boko Haram receives $400, 000 ransom to release hostages including wife of vice prime minister of Cameroon

Cameroonian authorities paid Boko Haram insurgents at least $400,000 in ransom in order to secure the release of Francoise Agnes Moukouri, wife of Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali, According to SaharaReporters.

Boko Haram insurgents had abducted Mrs. Ali in July, from the town of Kolofata. The insurgents also seized the town’s district head. The deal to secure their release was struck three days ago, as SaharaReporters had earlier reported.

The SaharaReporters’ source, who was part of the negotiation that led to the release of Mrs. Ali and several other hostages, disclosed that the terms of the settlement included the payment of an undisclosed sum of money from the Chinese government. Boko Haram subsequently released 10 Chinese construction workers who had been held hostage since their abduction in May.

In addition, the Cameroonian government agreed to release four commanders of the Islamist group who had been in Cameroonian jails. The most disturbing part of the deal is that Boko Haram militants demanded and received a significant supply of arms and ammunition, including a guarantee by Cameroon that the weapons would have safe passage to insurgent fighters.

The source disclosed that President Idris Derby of Chad was instrumental in the negotiations because of his closeness to some Boko Haram commanders.

SaharaReporters had reported three days ago that the Cameroonian and Chinese hostages had been released. Cameroonian Minister of Information, Issa Bakary, initially denied the report. However, the office of the Cameroonian President, Paul Biya, today declared that 27 hostages, including Mrs. Ali, 10 Chinese construction workers, and the district head of Kolofata had been released.

The Islamist group has wreaked havoc in Nigeria’s northeast zone and has made occasional forays into neighboring Cameroon.

Queen Elizabeth II Honors Angelina Jolie .Damehood: Brad Pitt, Kids In Attendance as Well

The Queen of Hollywood meets the Queen of England! Queen Elizabeth II honored Angelina Jolie on Friday, Oct. 10, face-to-face inside Buckingham Palace in London. A source tells us that her husband Brad Pitt and their six kids were present for the special occasion.

The actress and humanitarian, 39, met with Her Royal Majesty in the Palace's 1844 Room, where the Queen presented her with an Honorary Dame Grand Cross. (An honorary dame is the female equivalent of knighthood, the highest honor bestowed upon a citizen of the British Empire.)
For the event, Jolie looked resplendent in a tailored lilac skirt and matching jacket, cinched at her waist. The Maleficent actress swept her hair back in a classy updo and kept her jewelry at a minimum, wearing tiny pearl earrings and her wedding band.

When the Queen presented her with the award, the mother of six beamed with her right hand over her heart.
Since Jolie is not a citizen of the Commonwealth, she receives an Honorary Dame Grand Cross instead of the formal title of Dame. Still, "DCMG" can be written beside her name.

In June, Jolie was made an honorary dame in the Queen's Birthday Honors List, for her humanitarian work. The award recognized Jolie's efforts to combat sexual violence in war-torn regions around the world. The announcement overlapped with Jolie's stay in London for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence In Conflict, which was co-chaired by the U.N. Special Envoy.
"To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to," Jolie said. "Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."

Jolie has been directing and starring in her upcoming movie, By the Sea, with her husband in Malta. The tight-knit family flew in via private jet on Thursday, Oct. 9, and will return to the gorgeous destination on Saturday.
"It was difficult to take time off from the film, but Angie wouldn’t have missed this for the world. What a day!"

Paul Patton files for divorce from Robin Thicke

Paula Patton has filed for divorce from estranged husband Robin Thicke, the Los Angeles Superior Court confirms.
Patton and Thicke, who were high school sweethearts married for eight years, separated in Feb. 2014. At the time, a source close to the "Blurred Lines" singer told Us it had "been a long time coming" and that "their marriage was unraveling for a long time."
The split came after Thicke's controversial 2013 VMA performance with Miley Cyrus and after he was rumored to have cheated on Patton after pictures surfaced of him grabbing another woman's bare butt while posing for a photo.
Patton cited irreconcilable differences and is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their 4-year-old son Julian.
Following their split, Thicke went to great lengths to try to win his wife back, going as far as to crying on stage at the BET Awards in June, where he told the crowd: "Good evening, my name is Robin Thicke, I'd like to dedicate this song to my wife, and said, 'I miss you, and I'm sorry.'" The lovesick singer then released an album in her honor titled Paula.

In July, Thicke admitted he was at a loss when it came to winning Patton back. "I actually have no idea what I'm doing," he said on Good Morning America. "I'm just kinda flying by the seat of my pants on this one."

Showcasing his “Bash” tattoo (an ode to his 19-month old son with estranged wife Amber Rose) along his hairline, Khalifa snapped a selfie as his colorist tended to his transitioning tresses. Here, it appears, she’s in the process of bleaching his mane as the tips have turned white.
Stage one! Khalifa teases the camera with his all-white dread locks, which fall over the front of his face.
Voila! “Purple Rain,” the rapper captioned a pic that showed off his shockingly bright new hair color. Khalifa’s new look comes two weeks after Rose filed for divorce after just 14 months of marriage.

Michael Jackson's Son I'M ON THE MONEY TEAM ... With Floyd Mayweather

There's only been ONE person who spent his fortune more recklessly than Floyd Mayweather ... and now that person's son is an official member of Floyd's "Money Team."

Prince Michael Jackson was rollin' through Calabasas this weekend -- with "The Money Team" decals plastered all over his tricked out GMC truck ... joining other TMT members like Warren Buffett, Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne.

Prince is a HUUUGE fight fan -- and has been training in jiu-jitsu at the renowned Gracie Academy in Beverly Hills. Clearly, he's into boxing as well.

For the record, Floyd's spending sprees DON'T HOLD A CANDLE to MJ's shopping habits ... especially in Vegas, where Michael would spend MILLIONS of dollars in a matter of minutes.

According to our GoT spies ... more than 200 security guards were hired to protect the set while shooting the "Walk of Shame" scene -- where Lena's character Cersei walks stark naked out of a church and through town. We're told the 4-day shoot in Croatia got so pricey because of the added crew -- and producers having to pay local shop owners to shut down and leave the area.

Cell phones were banned on set so photos wouldn't get leaked (oops!) -- and everyone signed confidentiality agreements that threatened $250,000 lawsuits for violators.

It's been a bitch to get this far. We broke the story ... the whole scene was nearly called off when church leaders banned any nude shoots. They ended up shooting on the other side of town.

As for who actually witnessed Lena, au naturel -- we're told only 4 key crew members were present for the unveiling.

Jason Derulo Broke Up With Jordin Sparks Over the Phone, Said Their Sex Life Wasn't to Blame For the Split

Jason Derulo is still talking about his split with Jordin Sparks — and this time, he's admitting he called it quits with the songstress over the phone, after almost three years together. And, no, in case you were wondering, Derulo said it wasn't their sex life that was to blame for the split.
After denying again that he was unfaithful (Derulo told Us Weekly in a statement last week he didn't cheat and reiterated it again in an interview with Ryan Seacrest on Monday, Sept. 29), the singer told Power 105.1's DJ Envy that their relationship simply ran it's course. "Every relationship has their ups and downs and you know, when you start having more downs than ups, you gotta take a look at your relationship and be like, 'Is this something that I'm supposed to be doing?'" he explained during the interview on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
While the "Ridin' Solo" singer's been vocal about the split, he got even more candid with the DJ. "It wasn't a problem in that area at all," Derulo said in response to a joke about his and Spark's sex life. "Yeah [our sex life was fine]," he added.

The now-single 25-year-old, who penned the song "Marry Me" for Sparks last year, went on to admit that he called it quits with Sparks "over the phone" because he "wasn't in town."
Sparks, for her part, has been taking the split in stride, telling Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford in an interview, "I'm good, actually...I read this quote [yesterday], and it said, 'When something unexpected happens in your life, or you think something bad happens, just say 'Plot twist!' and move on.'"

When asked by Wendy Williams if Derulo cheated on her, however, Sparks said, "I actually don't want to comment on that," and added that when it comes to the BMW he gifted her with, "he can have it."

Preisdent Jonathan List Out His Achievements Ahead of 2015 Elections (See What He Has Achieved)

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain patriotic in their support for the Armed Forces fighting the insurgents in the North-eastern part of Nigeria.
The president condemned the actions of the terrorists, saying it is now obvious that they do not mean well for anyone.

In his Independence Day broadcast on Wednesday, Jonathan thanked Nigerians for the support and faith they have shown in the country, highlighting what his administration is doing to halt terrorist activities in the country and what it is doing to relieve the victims.

“While we continue to deploy our resources in the fight against the terrorists, we do recognise the great toll the conflict is taking on our people,” he said.

“This is why, to assist the afflicted, we have launched the Victims Support Fund, an independent multi-sectoral charity, which will aggressively solicit resources to augment Government’s statutory intervention, in bringing succour to the injured, the displaced and the bereaved.

“In partnership with Nigerian business leaders and international partners, we have also introduced the Safe Schools Initiative which is aimed at promoting safe environments for education nationwide, starting with the North East region.”

He assured that the government’s overall objective is to do all it can to sustain the momentum of economic advancement in the North-eastern region of the country “despite the machinations of the terrorists and their sponsors.”

He enjoined Nigerians to continue keeping faith with the government on the fight notwithstanding political, religious or other such affiliations.

Moving on in the broadcast, the president pointed out that he has delivered on promises he made during the last independence speech.

Confab

First he mentioned the Sovereign National Conference, describing it as a centenary gift to Nigerians.

“We have successfully delivered on that promise as we established the 2014 National Conference headed by Justice Legbo Kutigi,” Jonathan said. “After months of deliberations, which did not come without its challenges, the conference concluded its assignment and has handed its Report to me.”

He assured that he has made a firm commitment that the government would act on the recommendations of the conference.

“ This, I have started by setting up the Ministerial Committee headed by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation to work out the modalities for implementing the Report. Every promise I make, God willing, I will see to its fulfilment. I assure you, we shall implement the report,” he said.

He said a major lesson the confab has instilled in the mind of Nigerians is that a multi-ethnic country like must learn to embrace painstaking dialogue until consensus is established.

“To me, the National Conference is the greatest centenary gift to our country that we must cherish and sustain,” he said.

Robust Democracy

Next he commented on the achievement of 16 uninterrupted years of democratic rule, emphasising that the elections that have been conducted under his administration have been regarded both locally and internationally as transparent, free and fair.

“Our Administration has made a commitment to ensure that we build and sustain a democratic infrastructure anchored on free and fair elections. International and local observers have attested to the positive evolution of electoral credibility and we cannot afford to relent,” he said.

“We will continue to ensure that the will of the electorate prevails so that political leaders would be reminded at all times that there is a day of reckoning when they have to go back to the people at the polls. Election days must not be days of violence and death. We must remain vigilant to ensure that our electoral process is characterised by peace, security and transparency.”

He enjoined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), all security agencies, politicians and the electorate to work conscientiously and peacefully, together, to consolidate on the gains of the recent elections.

“Free and fair elections have come to stay; nothing else will be acceptable to our people,” he declared.

Local Content

On the economy, the president mentioned the significant moves that has been made in the power, agricultural and oil and gas sectors saying the consolidation of these and many others has secured a place for the country as the biggest economy in Africa.

“Our power sector reform is on course with the ultimate objective of generating enough electricity to power our homes, industries and businesses,” he said. “We are making giant strides in the Agricultural Sector which we are re-positioning to diversify our economy. We will continue to upgrade our infrastructure to make life easier for all and create an enabling environment for enterprise to flourish.”

He explained that over the last four years, the implementation of the Nigerian Content Act in the Oil and Gas Sector has ensured major increase in the participation of indigenous Oil and Gas companies in the industry.

He said several critical infrastructure projects have been commissioned and commenced, pointing out that the level of indigenous asset ownership has hugely increased while utilisation of Nigerian-owned and built assets such as marine vessels and rigs is being progressively enforced.

“There has been maximised local value addition by encouraging the manufacture of equipment components and parts within the country,” he explained.

“There has also been massive growth in indigenous participation in the provision of goods and services to the upstream sector from 10 percent to 60 percent within the last four years.

“Today, following the rebasing of our economy, every international monitoring and ratings agency now acknowledges Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa, with a Gross Domestic Product of five hundred and ten billion dollars ($510 billion) which also places us as the 26th largest economy in the world.”

Access To Funds For SMEs

He mentioned that earlier in the year, the administration launched the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP) with the stated objective of fast tracking inclusive growth, job creation, enterprise development and industrialisation.

“The success of these policies is already evident in the increased value addition in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors,” he said.

He said the one of the objectives of the administration was to make the country a regional hub for automobile production and that the objective is still being achieved since the country can now boast of made-in-Nigeria vehicles.

“A number of foreign auto manufacturers have established plants in Nigeria, complementing the laudable efforts of our local vehicle manufacturers who have also demonstrated great innovation and competitiveness,” he said.

On access to funds for small and medium scale enterprises, he said the administration has launched a special support programme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with an initial intervention fund of N220 billion.

“This is in addition to the Presidential Job Creation Board which I inaugurated recently with the charge to create three million jobs annually,” Jonathan said.

“In demonstration of our Administration’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit, we have commenced the new mortgage re-finance programme with the establishment of the Nigerian Mortgage Re-finance Company. It is expected that, in addition to creating additional housing units across the country, this initiative also represents a huge job creation opportunity.

MDGs

“We have recorded notable success in the social sector. Nigeria has been globally acknowledged for reducing extreme hunger by more than half, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) formally presenting the country with an award for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on Hunger three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals.”

Agriculture

He said the progress made in the agricultural sector especially, is a results of deliberate government policy to increase capacity in the country’s agricultural sector of which the first step was to address and eliminate the graft in fertilizer procurement system and ensure that the product gets directly to the farmer.

“We are expanding our irrigation infrastructure to ensure that our farmers have sufficient water supply for dry season farming,” he said.

“A benefit of these combined actions is that our national food import bill has declined from 1.1 trillion naira (6.9 billion dollars) in 2009 to 684.7 billion naira (4.35 billion dollars) by December 2013, and continues to decline.”

Education

On Education, he said modern hybrid schools are being provided for less privileged children across the country, resulting in significant increase in the national school enrolment figure

He said in order to further enhance access to education at the tertiary level, fourteen new Federal Universities have been established; and, to encourage persons of exceptional abilities, a Presidential Scholarship Scheme based strictly on excellence and merit has been established.

Infrastructure

Jonathan said: “On infrastructure, we are building roads, bridges, and new rail lines to make it easier to traverse Nigeria and increase the integration of our people and our ability to do business with each other. In this regard, we have commenced the process of building the Second Niger Bridge. The Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue in Nasarawa and Benue States, will significantly reduce travel time by road between Northern and Southern Nigeria. The on-going dredging of the River Niger up to Baro in Niger State is opening up large parts of the Nigerian hinterland to maritime activity.

“The Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro-electric power projects are on course, and the Kashimbilla dam which we started a few years ago, is nearing completion. The successful privatisation of our power sector will in the long run enhance industrial growth. Policies such as this and others have raised Nigeria to the enviable status of being the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the past year.

“The result of this infrastructure drive is that two and a half million jobs have been created over the past two years. This is a record, which we are committed to improve upon to continue to provide jobs for our youth.

“An unprecedented number of Airports across the country, are not only being reconstructed at the same time, but being re-equipped and reassessed with emphasis on maintaining global standards.

Ebola

The president thanked the ministry of health and all Nigerians for the parts they all played in keeping the deadly Ebola virus at bay. He pointed out that the Ebola battle is still raging elsewhere in our sub-region and therefore enjoin all our Nigerians to continue to adhere strictly to all the guidelines that have been given by health officials to keep Ebola out of our country.

“I appreciate and welcome the spirit of collaboration, unity and partnership with which we confronted the threat of the Ebola Virus Disease. I thank all Nigerians for working together to prevent what could have become a major epidemic. I particularly thank the medical personnel, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.

“This is the spirit which we must demonstrate at all times as we face up to our challenges as a nation: one people, united by a common resolve, in the pursuit of one common national interest.”

He said one major goal of his administration is for all Nigerians to have access to the good things of life.
