Jega-Why I’m Being Attacked Over Card Readers

Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, Wednesday, said he has no regrets for insisting on deploying Smart Card Reader machines for the conduct of the general election, saying he knew that the decision would attract unwarranted attacks on his integrity as a person.
Would-be riggers the ones crying foul, says INEC boss
Jega, who stated this while unveiling the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja yesterday,, maintained that it is only those that hitherto nurtured plans to fraudulently manipulate the outcome of the elections, that have been crying foul over the introduction of the technology which he said would only add credibility to the electoral process in the country.
He said that INEC had perfected all its strategies and put every apparatus in place with a view to ensuring a hitch free poll that will reflect the summative choice of Nigerians.
“Let me use this opportunity to reassure Nigerians that we believe that we have done everything possible to ensure that the 2015 general election is successful.
We are adequately prepared in terms of both logistics and manpower.
Likewise, all the security agencies, especially the police which have a lead role to play in terms of providing security during elections, have assured us that they are ready.

Kate Henshaw Fights Woman In Market, Beaten Mercilessly In Asaba On Set + (Photos)

One of Nigeria’s highly respected actresses, Kate Henshaw, took some of her fans by surprise when she was in a dirty fight with a woman at a marketplace.

The mother of one may have been provoked by the woman and the actress-c*m-politician thought she could teach the woman a big lesson, but alas! she was beaten and ruffled on the ground to her greatest shock.

According to the storyline of the film she is shooting in Asaba, Delta State, Kate Henshaw was on her way to the market when an argument ensued between her and the woman, which later led into a serious fight. She was thrown to the ground and taught not to fight publicly again.

‘Public Assault’ is the name of the flick, which has the magical touch of Tchidi Chikere, a talented and top movie director in Nigeria. The film stars the likes of Hafiz Oyetoro (Saka), Queen Nwokoye and many others.

Rainstorm wreaks havoc in Zuba. Two killed, minor injured

The rainy season, to many is a period of blessing, but reverse was the case in Zuba area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as the heavy down pour the area experienced on Saturday claimed the lives of two people and left one injured.
The two persons who lost their lives in the rainstorm were said to be taking shelter in a shop on which a tree that was uprooted by the storm crashed.
One of the deceased, Haruna Abdullahi, a revenue collector at a roadside park in Zuba, was said to have been heading home from a mosque opposite the emir’s palace in Zuba, after the night prayer when the storm started which eventually led to his death.
According to a relative of the deceased, Sarkin Padan Zuba, Alhaji Muhammad Murtala, the deceased was killed in a shop where he was taking refuge from the rain. Murtala further noted that the storm uprooted a tree and it fell on the building, leading to the instant death of Abdullahi and Hadiza Muhammad, a recharge card seller behind the shop.

I will make naira equal in value to dollar – Buhari
Murtala also disclosed that the little daughter of the shop owner sustained minor injury on her head while her mother was not affected.

Angelina Jolie has ovaries and fallopian tubes removed

At 39, Angelina Jolie can never have kids again. But thankfully she has six children already. The actress revealed in an article she wrote for New York Times published today that she's had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure against cancer.
She said she had the surgery last week as she carries a gene that gave her a 50% risk of developing ovarian cancer. This surgery is coming two years after she had a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer. Read what she wrote in her New York Times article after the cut...

Angelina Jolie Pitt: Diary of a Surgery (as first published on New York Times)

Two years ago I wrote about my choice to have a preventive double mastectomy. A simple blood test had revealed that I carried a mutation in the BRCA1 gene. It gave me an estimated 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. I lost my mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer.
I wanted other women at risk to know about the options. I promised to follow up with any information that could be useful, including about my next preventive surgery, the removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes.
I had been planning this for some time. It is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe. It puts a woman into forced menopause. So I was readying myself physically and emotionally, discussing options with doctors, researching alternative medicine, and mapping my hormones for estrogen or progesterone replacement. But I felt I still had months to make the date.
Then two weeks ago I got a call from my doctor with blood-test results. “Your CA-125 is normal,” he said. I breathed a sigh of relief. That test measures the amount of the protein CA-125 in the blood, and is used to monitor ovarian cancer. I have it every year because of my family history.
But that wasn’t all. He went on. “There are a number of inflammatory markers that are elevated, and taken together they could be a sign of early cancer.” I took a pause. “CA-125 has a 50 to 75 percent chance of missing ovarian cancer at early stages,” he said. He wanted me to see the surgeon immediately to check my ovaries.
I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn’t live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren.
I called my husband in France, who was on a plane within hours. The beautiful thing about such moments in life is that there is so much clarity. You know what you live for and what matters. It is polarizing, and it is peaceful.
That same day I went to see the surgeon, who had treated my mother. I last saw her the day my mother passed away, and she teared up when she saw me: “You look just like her.” I broke down. But we smiled at each other and agreed we were there to deal with any problem, so “let’s get on with it.”
Nothing in the examination or ultrasound was concerning. I was relieved that if it was cancer, it was most likely in the early stages. If it was somewhere else in my body, I would know in five days. I passed those five days in a haze, attending my children’s soccer game, and working to stay calm and focused.
The day of the results came. The PET/CT scan looked clear, and the tumor test was negative. I was full of happiness, although the radioactive tracer meant I couldn’t hug my children. There was still a chance of early stage cancer, but that was minor compared with a full-blown tumor. To my relief, I still had the option of removing my ovaries and fallopian tubes and I chose to do it.
I did not do this solely because I carry the BRCA1 gene mutation, and I want other women to hear this. A positive BRCA test does not mean a leap to surgery. I have spoken to many doctors, surgeons and naturopaths. There are other options. Some women take birth control pills or rely on alternative medicines combined with frequent checks. There is more than one way to deal with any health issue. The most important thing is to learn about the options and choose what is right for you personally.
In my case, the Eastern and Western doctors I met agreed that surgery to remove my tubes and ovaries was the best option, because on top of the BRCA gene, three women in my family have died from cancer. My doctors indicated I should have preventive surgery about a decade before the earliest onset of cancer in my female relatives. My mother’s ovarian cancer was diagnosed when she was 49. I’m 39.
Last week, I had the procedure: a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. There was a small benign tumor on one ovary, but no signs of cancer in any of the tissues.
I have a little clear patch that contains bio-identical estrogen. A progesterone IUD was inserted in my uterus. It will help me maintain a hormonal balance, but more important it will help prevent uterine cancer. I chose to keep my uterus because cancer in that location is not part of my family history.
It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer. I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, “Mom died of ovarian cancer.”
Regardless of the hormone replacements I’m taking, I am now in menopause. I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.
I feel deeply for women for whom this moment comes very early in life, before they have had their children. Their situation is far harder than mine. I inquired and found out that there are options for women to remove their fallopian tubes but keep their ovaries, and so retain the ability to bear children and not go into menopause. I hope they can be aware of that.
It is not easy to make these decisions. But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.
Angelina Jolie Pitt is a filmmaker and a U.N. envoy.

Mavins’ Sh*tty Performance At The AMVCAs Reekado Banks Explains

First to break the silence on the tension that brewed from their dismal performance at the recently concluded AMVCA, is Reekado Banks of the Supreme Mavin Dynasty. Speaking with an associate at Pulse NG on why their performance failed to excite fans and other guests, he faulted some reasons being the absence of the performing parties as well as their inability to rehearse prior to the eventual performance. Hear him:

“The only time we got to put something together was that day.At the sound check it was just me, Di’ja and Korede that were available. D’prince travelled and was coming back that day. Jazzy was not available too.”
“At the soundcheck, the camera men were like please when the other people come, help us tell them that you guys should stay together because of the camera, you are doing this not for the show but for the tv. we tried as much as possible to stay together but when…we were trying to follow their script. so it wasn’t entirely our fault.”
“We tried to balance between our art and the script but the song isn’t 10 minutes it was about 4 minutes or something, so yeah we were just trying to obey the camera men. for further shows we’ll just get more time to practice.”

We Are Worried About The Age Of Buhari’s Ideas And Not His Age – Akpabio

Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill Akpabio has declared that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress Muhammadu Buhari is not too old to lead the country if he is healthy enough to do so. However, he noted that Nigerians will not allow Buhari to use an old trick to deceive them.

Speaking at a strategy meeting of the PDP governors in Lagos, Akpabio said: “We are aware that some people have complained about the age of General Buhari. But we do not see anything wrong with his age if he thinks he can withstand the rigours of the job.
“But, we are extremely concerned about the age of his ideas. We are concerned that a man who could not take charge when he was in his 40s but rather bequeathed, to historical infamy, a regime named after two people (Idiagbon/Buhari regime instead of one person as has always been the case) cannot take charge at 73 when his health would need constant monitoring.
“We are concerned about the age of his ideas because 50 years after the first coup, hinged on fighting corruption, Buhari is still thinking of using the same subterfuge to deceive us today. We dare not allow anyone to use a 50-year-old trick to destroy our democratic values. We are wiser today.”
The governor also cited what he claimed as contradictory positions by the APC on the Boko Haram insurgency, saying the party has moved between accommodating the group and pushing for its extinction.
“When the Federal Government was contemplating negotiating with the dreaded Boko Haram group, Boko Haram nominated Gen. Buhari as their chief negotiator. The APC is like the man who set his seat ablaze in the theatre, and ran out screaming, ‘fire, fire, fire.’ But God has intervened, and we are defeating Boko Haram.
“Despite the antics of the opposition and others sympathetic to Boko Haram, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, and indeed the military have been able to rise to the occasion by decimating insurgents and restoring hope of a peaceful North-East in particular and Nigeria in general.”
Akpabio also faulted the preparation of INEC for the elections, warning that no voters must be deprived of their rights to vote on account of what he described as the failures of the card readers.
“We reassert that on no account should any registered voter be disenfranchised for non-possession of PVCs owing to no personal fault or rejection by faulty card readers.”

‘Boko Haram’ kills dozens in a raid Borno State

Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed at least 45 people in a village in Borno state, north-east Nigeria, witnesses have said.
The gunmen who stormed Njaba targeted men and boys before setting the village on fire, survivors added.
The raid happened early on Tuesday but was not reported immediately because of the remoteness of the area.
Boko Haram has killed thousands of people in its drive to establish an Islamic state.
Many survivors of the attack on Njaba fled to the nearby town of Damboa.
A resident of the town told the BBC the dead had been left to decompose because the villagers feared returning to Njaba.
The total number of dead remains unclear, with some reports suggesting the figure may be as high as 100.
Information often travels slowly from regions where Boko Haram is active, partly because the militants have damaged communications infrastructure.
Njaba is about 100km (62 miles) south of the state capital, Maiduguri. There were no security forces in the village at the time of the attack.
Many villagers were attending morning prayers when the attack happened, a witness quoted by news website Sahara Reporters said.
Fatima Abaka said there was “pandemonium” when the shooting started.
“I ran into the bush. Since then I [have]never seen my husband and three children,” she said. “[I] came back to our village in the afternoon, dead bodies were scattered everywhere.”
Another witness, Aminatu Mommodu, said the bodies of victims, including many men with their throats slit, were in the mosque.
Other villagers caught by the gunmen outside the mosque had been shot, she said.
Ibrahim Wagu, a Maiduguri resident who comes from Njaba, told Reuters news agency that two of his relatives had been killed.
“My older brother and my sister’s first son were killed,” he said.
Boko Haram controls large areas of Borno state but in recent months has also carried out cross-border raids into Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
The three countries have joined Nigeria to form a military coalition, which has recaptured several towns and villages in recent weeks.
Chadian forces have recently helped the Nigerian army recapture several towns and villages from Boko Haram.
